Stan Alves

Stan Alves
Combining the skills gained over 30 years in the AFL first as a champion player then as a successful coach with his extensive experiences in the areas of business management, development and communication and his ability to deal with personal tragedy and adversity, this truly gifted leader, motivator and communicator is dedicated to passing on his knowledge and experiences to others for them to be successful in their chosen fields of business, education, sport and more importantly, life.

Excellent wingman though he undoubtedly was, Stan Alves might never had made the grade in league football had he not persisted at Melbourne when legendary coach Norm Smith thought him too lightweight and feeble.

Once given his chance, however, he quickly proved both his coach and all other skeptics at the club wrong as he went on to amass 226 VFL games for the club between 1965 and 1976, winning best and fairest awards in 1972 and 1974.

He also played interstate football for the VFL. In 1977, he crossed to North Melbourne where he had the satisfaction of appearing in a premiership team in his first season. Alves added 40 VFL games for the Kangaroos, and also booted 14 goals to bring his final career tally to 174. Between 1994 and 1998 Stan Alves coached St Kilda, leading the side to only its fourth ever grand final in 1997, plus a pre-season flag in 1996.

Stan also supports Reclink, which was established to assist people experiencing social and economic disadvantage access to sporting activities as a form of social therapy.

Today, Stan holds a number of different roles in football and business and is known to the ears of thousands around the nation through his role as a special comments analyst on Melbourne's ABC Radio.

A truly talented coach, motivator and communicator, Stan is dedicated to passing on his knowledge and experiences to others for them to be successful in their chosen fields of sport, business and more importantly, life.
