Zigatango

Zigatango
Consisting of five Perth-based instrumentalists all still in their twenties, Zigatango brings a youthful flair and wild intensity to the traditional styles of Gypsy and Tango music.

The band's diverse repertoire includes arrangements of fiery Gypsy melodies from Eastern Europe, together with the tangos of the Argentinean Astor Piazzolla - combining the irresistible energy of traditional dance music with a sense of melancholy, drama and passion. With occasional forays into folk and jazz (and even 70s rock), Zigatango is bound to appeal to anyone with a taste for the exciting and unusual.

Zigatango’s performances are primarily musical - however, several items are suitable for dancing (tango or traditional style). For certain events, Zigatango can also include an entertaining performance item featuring an expert juggler.

In early 2008, Zigatango received a WAMi nomination in the category of World Music. A few months later they recorded their first album, which was featured local album of the week on RTR-FM. Zigatango has played at several local venues, including Little Creatures Loft and Kulcha; and has performed in the Fremantle Arts Centre, and in the 'Sunday @ Subi' concert series together with members of the Perth Tango Club. During 2007 and 2008, Zigatango gave performances at a number of festivals - including Fairbridge Folk Festival - on occasion collaborating with the gifted young juggler Alex Duhig and Gypsy dancer Ivanna Mayorenko. They've also attracted the talents of a variety of other musicians, including the newest band member Greg Coles. Together, they continue to perform around Perth, at festivals and other special events.

The members of Zigatango are Geoffrey Pearce on violin, Richard Watson on accordion, Siobhan Finn on viola, Justin Story on guitar and Greg Coles on bass.
